Glutathione and its Many uses in Parkinson's Disease, Cancer, Heart Attack and more

What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is synthesized in the body from the amino acids L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid, and glycine. The sulfhydryl (thiol) group (SH) of cysteine serves as a proton donor and is responsible for the biological activity of glutathione.
It is an antioxidant, preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides
Raising GSH levels through direct supplementation of glutathione is difficult. Research suggests that glutathione taken orally is not well absorbed across the gastrointestinal tract. In a study of acute oral administration of a very large dose (3 grams) of oral glutathione, Witschi and coworkers found "it is not possible to increase circulating glutathione to a clinically beneficial extent by the oral administration of a single dose of 3 g of glutathione."
One study showed that patients after a heart attack were benefited by intravenous glutathione. Another study was done in Italy by a neurologist named Sechi who showed that intravenous glutathione (600mg twice daily) significantly improved patients with early Parkinson’s disease giving a 42% decline in disability.

Glutathione and Heart Attack

Altomare, Emanuele, et al."High-Dose Antioxidant Therapy During Thrombolysis in Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction," Current Therapeutic Research, February, 1996;57(2):131-141.
This study evaluated 67 patients with a myocardial infarction treated with recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA), of which 35 received glutathione at an intravenous bolus initially of 1800 mg followed by 20 ug/kg per minute for the next 24 hours. Intravenous glutathione appears to limit the adverse effects associated with reperfusion-induced oxidative stress.

Glutathione and Cancer
Glutathione therapy can reduce the toxicity of some chemo agents. In one study (Tedeschi), the toxicity of cisplatin, an effective drug in the treatment of solid tumors, was greatly reduced. It is proposed in this article that glutathione is a promising antidote. Glutathione is a safe compound that prevents cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity without affecting its antitumor activity. This would enhance the ability to use higher doses of cisplatin and improve efficacy against certain tumors. The advantage of the combination of glutathione with high doses of cisplatin was demonstrated by the impressive response rate in the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Guest Post: Naturopathic Remedy for Osteoporosis

Naturopathic Remedy for Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is the weakening and thinning of bones that occurs over time due to a poor diet, lack of exercise and aging in general. Prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to bone loss, but once osteoporosis has been detected the progression can be stopped and in some cases bone mass re-built. Turn brittle bones into better bones with this naturopathic remedy for osteoporosis.

Exercise is Key
Weight bearing exercise is key for both the prevention of and/or progression brittle bone disease. Weight bearing does not mean you have to lift heavy dumb bells every day, but you will need to go for a 30 minute walk at least 3 times per week. Walking causes your bones to lift your body weight and keeps bones strong. Yoga, tai chi, jogging, tennis, aerobics or any other exercise that gets you up and on your feet is a weight bearing exercise and will help remedy osteoporosis naturally.

Calcium
Calcium is essential for building and maintaining strong bones. Bones are always in the process of tearing themselves down and re-building, and readily available calcium is needed for that re-building process. Milk and other dairy products are rich in calcium and should be a part of a naturopathic remedy for osteoporosis. Lactose intolerant people can obtain calcium from whole grains, beans, dark green leafy vegetables and almonds. Natural calcium supplements will also provide the needed bone nutrient. Nicotine, carbonated beverages, foods high in sugar or salt and red meat hinder the absorption of calcium.

Vitamin D
As much as the body needs calcium and as frequently as you make it available to the body, it can not be absorbed and put to use without vitamin D. The body can not store vitamin D either, so a daily dose is needed to keep bones strong and healthy. Being exposed to sunlight for 10-15 minutes each day (sitting near a window, on a park bench or walking in the sunshine with face and arms exposed is sufficient), consuming dairy products fortified with vitamin D or taking a daily supplement is all that’s needed.

Magnesium
Magnesium is needed by the body for many things, including building strong bones to stave off osteoporosis. Magnesium is also one of the minerals many people are deficient in, and low levels of magnesium means low bone density which translates into brittle bones. Magnesium is naturally found in a lot of the same foods that are rich in calcium - grains, dark leafy green vegetables and beans along with fish, beef, chicken and pork. Natural magnesium supplements are also available to help remedy osteoporosis.

Herbs, Acupuncture and More
The naturopathic remedy for osteoporosis treats the whole person and starts with diet and exercise, then builds upon that foundation to halt bone loss and re-build bone. The remedy pathway may include herbs, acupuncture, massage, hydrotherapy and other therapies that are designed to stimulate bone re-growth and strengthen bone tissue. Naturopathic medicine is a natural health care system that is designed specifically for each patient’s needs and uses no chemicals or drugs to treat ailments.

Detoxification Foot Baths Do They Work?

I always get asked “do those ionic detoxification foot baths work?”

While there is no concrete evidence that ionic footbaths, can remove toxins from the body.
Researchers from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Pharmacy conducted a series of tests running a footbath with and without feet and analyzing the water for differences in the level of potentially toxic elements (Arsenic, lead, etc..).

“Whether or not the feet were there, the composition of the water was pretty much the same,” said study co-author naturopathic doctor Dugald Seely, director of research and clinical epidemiology at the CCNM and executive director of CCNM’s Ottawa Integrative Cancer Centre.

“There was no significant difference in terms of any of the toxic elements being leached out into the water,” he said, listing heavy lead, cadmium, and arsenic.
So what causes the color to change in the water? Well “we found over time was that the array was corroding,” he said.

He noted that it was elements from this corrosion that caused the water to become dirty and cloudy and change colour.

So from that study there were no significant changes in the metals. Although this is just one study and there are always varying opinions out there. But for now this does not help detoxify the body.

Neural Therapy, See my video and case on how it Can help you! By Dr. Kin Leung Naturopathic Fundamentals Airdrie

Neural therapy was developed in Germany beginning in the 1920s. Neural therapy is a remarkably safe and simple method of treating many medical problems and is taught in German medical schools.

How does it Work?

Specific homeopathic preparations, chelating agents, vitamins and/or local anesthetics are used in the injection solution.  An injected anesthetic will cause a nerve to be numbed by changing the positive and negative charges on the membrane of the nerve tissue so that no sensation can be passed along such as when your lips become numb after a visit to the dentist. In neural therapy the intention is not to anaesthetize or numb the nerve, but rather to change the membrane potential temporarily, with the expectation that when the anesthetic wears off, the membrane charges and nerve function will return to normal. Neural Therapy is like rebooting the “body computer”, the autonomic nervous system, to reset regulation and normalize function.

Neural therapy is a nervous system regulation therapy, so just about anything short of cancer and metabolic disease can be positively affected. The more common conditions that benefit from it include: back and neck pain, posttraumatic conditions, chronic pain from whiplash and head injury, joint pain, muscle pain, and athletic injuries. Jaw and head pain, post-surgical pain (including dental), digestive disturbances, sinusitis, hypothyroid, muscle injuries, organ dysfunctions and scar disturbances also benefit from neural therapy.
